This is a book about the totality of business—the society and culture in which it is embedded, the marketplace and community that encompass it, the nature and unique features of its inner workings, the character and aspirations of its practitioners. American business practitioners are persons of practical bent whose overriding absorption is to “do the thing,” here and now, in a competitively effective manner.

Positioned by American culture as sovereign individuals charged with creating wealth, American business practitioners engage with their fellow citizens in shaping and advancing the collaborative society of which they are a part. Within this conceptual frame, wise practitioners value integrity and knowledge over power and fame, reality over idealism, wealth creation and management over profit taking, entrepreneurship and open dealing over tradition and intrigue. Purpose driven and socially conscious, they steward resources, adhering to the virtues of fidelity, courage, benevolence, gratitude, sympathy, and prudence.

To succeed in an era of globalization, American business requires public support globally. It is incumbent on business practitioners, therefore to discover and promote effective ways to improve the public’s understanding of business and its societal role in the creation and management of wealth—locally, nationally, and globally.

The Way of Business strives to increase understanding of the role of business in the modern world, and to equip business practitioners to engage effectively in the public dialog.
