August 2007 - Print-on-Demand Books

With current technology, getting a book into print is no longer strictly the domain of publishing houses. For books that have a more limited audience and require a smaller run, print-on-demand can be the ideal soluwition. The concept is perfect for first-time or independent authors who want to get their work out to the public, as well as family and organizational histories, memoirs, niche publications and literary magazines produced by schools.

Production for print-on-demand is totally digital and inline, offering high-quality printing for small quantities at less cost than an offset press. The customer simply supplies two print-ready files, one for the book and one for the cover. A PDF file is the preferred format for printing. Interface Graphics can provide customers with additional assistance in converting files to PDF whenever necessary, as well as lend a hand with supporting helper applications. Make sure all images are high-resolution and all fonts are embedded.

Trim size for books ranges from four inches by six inches, up to 8 1/4 inches by 10 3/4 inches. The process is limited to soft cover books at this time, but hard cover books are emerging and will become easier to produce and more common in the near future. Print-on-demand is most economical for book runs of 750 or less. For projects that require a larger run customers should consider offset printing. In addition, if an author is considering selling their book, they should be sure to get information on obtaining an ISBN number.

Print-on-demand offers some unique advantages. A finished book can be in print in as little as two to four weeks from start to finish. Because the runs are small, the customer avoids storage expenses for excess inventory. Files are kept in an archive for easy retrieval if another printing is needed, and a customer can order a run of as few as 20 copies.

Interface Graphics can perform a broad range of fulfillment services that include taking orders, packaging, shrink wrapping and shipping. Customers can also use our marketing tools and expertise to move their products, getting help with press releases, sell sheets and connecting with websites and distributors.
