This Month's Topic: "What's the Best File Format?"
At IGI Publishing, we’re often asked which file formats work best for photos, line art and other graphics. This can be a confusing decision; there are many file formats out there, and the differences between them are often subtle. From a publishing standpoint, not all file formats are ideal for high-quality print reproduction. To help you choose the best file format for your photos and graphics, keep this chart handy:

Planning Tip
All About Compression – Why are two 300dpi image files not alike? One word: Compression. Each of these formats removes pixel information to create a smaller file. “Lossy” compression formats, such as BMP and GIF, remove a greater number of pixels, resulting in a lower-quality file. That’s why we recommend “lossless” compression formats such as TIF and EPS for high-quality printing.
