April 2006: Topic: Proofing Your Publishing Project
There are two main proofing options available at IGI Publishing: Laser-printed proofs that mimic the pages of your book (also called “hard” proofs), and PDF files that can be viewed onscreen (“soft” proofs). Either one has its advantages – hard proofs more closely resemble the finished product, while soft proofs are easy to manage and can be shared – so choose the type of proof with which you’re most comfortable.
One tip to keep in mind regarding hard proofs: Because of their cost, we recommend you use hard proofs later in the proofing cycle. Initial proofing stages for books will often involve plenty of spelling corrections and content changes; if you’re comfortable with them, soft proofs can save you time and money during this process. This may not apply if you’re supplying us with print-ready files, where high-quality color laser proofs are a good final proofing option.
Communication is Key
Everyone has a different method for reviewing proofs and communicating changes. When you request proofs, let IGI know how long you would like to review them, and confirm with us how you will communicate changes. Sharing these key pieces of information will help keep your book project on schedule.
